There are a lot of people in the area who will be taking a vacation in the next couple of months. It is winter, the days are short and the weather is cold and miserable. Many of you are already tired of it all and want nothing more than a few days on a sandy beach with the sun beating down on your back.
Actually, that does sound ideal, we’ll get pacing right away. Before you leave on your beach vacation, you need to make sure your home is protected. Whether you are going away for two weeks or just over the weekend, take the right steps to ensure nobody breaks into your home in your absence.
Bostons Locksmith, your mobile locksmith in Boston, offers these tips that will help keep your home more secure while you are away.
You’ve Got Mail
A huge pile of mail accumulating in your mailbox is an instant tip-off that you have been gone for a period of time. If you are planning on being gone for more than a day or two, set it up so somebody stops by and gets your mail or have the post office stop delivery until you get back.
Keep Quiet
You never want to publicly announce when you are leaving on vacation and when you plan on coming back. We get it. You are excited about your vacation and want everybody on social media to know you are going so they can be jealous. But in doing so, you are basically letting the world know that if anyone wants to rob your house, here is when the family will be gone.
Play it safe and don’t even mention your vacation on social media until you have come back home. Then, by all means, boast about your trip and make others nice and jealous.
Shovel Your Driveway and Walks
A cleared driveway is a pretty good indication that somebody is home. If you will be traveling on days that it snows, perhaps you can get a family member, friend or neighbor to shovel your driveway and walks.
Talk to Neighbors
Let all of your neighbors know that you will be taking a vacation and the times you will be gone. This lets them know to be extra aware of what is happening in the neighborhood and with your house in particular.
Install Timers
Make the effort to install timers on both outdoor and indoor lights. In doing so, you can give the illusion that people are home. You will also want to install outdoor lights with motion sensors. Burglars really don’t like bright lights.
Cover Up Windows
While you are away, your curtains should be closed. An open window gives burglars the opportunity to take a peek inside to see who is home. It also gives them the opportunity to see expensive items they want to take.
Point Cameras at Doorway
With cameras on your front door, you can better catch criminals in the act. So if somebody does break in while you are gone, there is a chance they could be found.
Lock Up Valuables
Either lock up your valuables in a safe or take them to a safe location while you are on vacation. So even if someone does break in, they won’t find the expensive items.
Install a Smart Lock
Smart locks use a keypad for entry, which means no more handing out keys or hiding them when you are gone. You simply give people who will be looking over the house while you are gone a code.
